Leadership In Action
Pros on a Mission: Meet Sherron Davenport
In the office, Sherron is a superstar—leading a team that ensures ProSight is in compliance with all regulatory bodies and being an active member of the Diversity Council.
At home, Sherron is a supermom—although she may not always feel that way with the responsibilities coming at a breakneck speed. From school drop-offs and pick-ups to cooking dinner, household chores, and everything in between, Sherron is in the trenches making sure her son, Andrae, and her stepdaughter, Ashley, are taken care of. But, like most moms, Sherron tends to put her children first—with her self-care taking a back seat.
Momma Gotta Live
When Andrae would visit his father for the weekend, Sherron would jokingly refer to her child-free weekends as her “momma gotta live” weekends: two full days where she could take a break from the constant duties of motherhood and just live. This could mean catching up with friends, getting in a good workout, or simply having some alone time to eat her dinner in peace.
It wasn’t always easy, but Sherron made a conscious effort to accept that she deserved the time to focus solely on herself and her needs. “As mothers, we pour so much into our children, and we tend to forget to take time for ourselves. No matter what we’re doing, we’re thinking or worrying about them. Motherhood is challenging, especially this past year. People found out some things about their kids that only their teachers knew!”

Momma Gotta Vision
As 2021 approached, Sherron decided it was time to focus on all aspects of her life. She became a woman on a mission with a clear vision in mind (and a great vision board). She decided that in order to be her best self, she needed to take the time to focus on just that—herself. One of her goals for the new year was to work towards achieving financial freedom, and what better way to accomplish that than by creating a side hustle? So on February 21st, Andrae’s birthday, Sherron launched the Momma Gotta Live (MGL) Boutique—a clothing brand born out of her desire to reclaim herself as a woman beyond motherhood. The MGL brand is a lifestyle represented in fashion. As Sherron puts it, “why can’t you stand for something and look and feel good at the same time?”
MGL Boutique offers fun, feel-good products that liberate moms who feel inundated with all of the responsibilities of being a mother. The boutique aims to encourage them to take time for themselves without feeling guilty. MGL has a variety of clothing items and other accessories with playful messages like, “nope. go ask your dad”, “Hustle like a MOTHER,” and, of course, “Momma Gotta Live. It’s a Whole Mood.”
But what started as a mood has turned into a movement. Sherron’s main goal for the brand is to empower other women to start embracing self-love and self-care. “I make mistakes. I think some moms are afraid to admit that. I have a child with special needs. He has ADHD, Tourette’s syndrome, and epilepsy. Sometimes he makes me want to pull my hair out, but it’s not his fault. Even so, that doesn’t mean it’s not tough on me. It’s challenging, but I own it—it’s real. But, I am still a woman first, and I don’t want to forget that, and I don’t want other women to forget that either.”

Momma Gotta Do It
As a superfan and one of his mom’s biggest supporters, Andrae has jumped into action to help get the word out about the MGL brand. Not only is he his mom’s resident photographer when she models the latest designs, Andrae also helps to promote her products on various social media platforms. He encourages Sherron to keep pushing forward and constantly expresses how proud he is of her and her vision. “You’re going to be big; I feel it,” he tells her.
Sherron explained that when she first started out, she was so focused on achieving perfection that it was delaying her from her end goal. However, once she let go of her inhibitions, she could finally turn her vision into a reality. “The best advice I can give is to just take the plunge and do it—whatever “it” is for you. Don’t be afraid to fail. You can always learn from your mistakes.”

Sherron is not only setting an example for other women, but also for her son and stepdaughter. “I want to encourage them to embrace their creativity and think outside the box.” In fact, entrepreneurship is heavily supported in their household. Sherron even helped Ashley start her own lip gloss line earlier this year.
What’s Next for MGL
Sherron hopes to continue to engage with other moms and have them embrace the MGL mentality. Eventually, she would like to expand her platform to a blog or podcast in which she can further spread her message to moms everywhere.
When asked what the most challenging part of her journey has been, Sherron doesn’t hesitate to answer that staying true to her brand can be a struggle when working hard to launch a business. “Every day, I have to make a conscious effort to cut some working hours on the weekend and leave some time for myself. After all, momma gotta live.”
