Over the past 20 years I’ve had the opportunity to witness dramatic changes in customers’ insurance needs. As the risk profiles and service expectations for customers have become more complex, the insurance industry has been slow to catch up. Traditional insurance companies have struggled to meet customer needs in a variety of ways:

  • Traditional insurance companies are “generalists” – that is to say they try to insure as many customers as possible with a “one-size fits all” approach. Few, if any, focus their attention on providing superior expertise and specialization to minimize risk for their clients.
  • Traditional insurance companies would rather debate the validity of a claim with a customer rather than working with the client to reduce their risk and help to avoid the claim in the first place.
  • Insurance companies often distribute through hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of distributors in an effort to sell as much insurance as possible. This excessive distribution guarantees a lower level of specialization and expertise from the salesperson , which translates into less value for the client.
  • Outdated technology systems – the insurance industry’s inability to keep pace with technology has resulted in poor customer service and responsiveness.
