How to Prepare for Hurricane and Windstorm Season
June 1st through November 30th is Atlantic hurricane and wind season in 2016. Wind season brings gale-force winds, flying debris, torrential rains, and possible flooding throughout this 6-month period. Property owners and managers in the eastern U.S. should prepare and secure their properties against all of these risks. The ProSight team has provided some tips to help our clients and their tenants stay prepared.
Know What to do Before the Storm
Here are actions you can take before the storm arrives.
- Trim or remove damaged trees or limbs
- Clean and secure loose gutters and downspouts and clear any debris to prevent water damage
- Ensure roof, windows and doors are secure
- Purchase and install a generator for possible loss of power
- Know your evacuation routes
Prepare for Power Outages and Other Emergencies
Storms can occur at any time, with very short notice. Property managers should have emergency procedures in place, and share these plans with their tenants prior to wind season each year. The Red Cross can be contacted during hurricane season to find a shelter and then plan the fastest route there. This emergency plan should be distributed to tenants when needed.
Having an emergency kit on the premises is an easy way to ensure storm preparedness. Such a kit should contain:
- At least 3 days’ non-perishable food and water
- First aid kit
- Prescription medications
- Important contact numbers (medical centers, insurance agents/companies, utilities, neighbors)
- Copies of important documents (insurance policies, ownership certificates and banking information)
Any area with a high hurricane or windstorm risk will be more costly to insure, but appropriate coverage is a must in such locations. A property owner who wants the best for their investment should insure their investment against all eventualities.
